Keeping a secret is very important because by sharing something to someone close, it shows trust. Although keeping a secret is the right thing to do, I do not think all secrets should be kept. Sometimes, certain secrets can put one's life in danger and that is when it would be important to tell someone who could help. Some people may say that when someone cannot keep a secret, others will lose trust in that person but trust can be easily gained back. I am not saying that secrets should not be kept, but sometimes it is okay to share them so others will benefit. A good example from the book of when a secret should be kept is when the Hubermanns are hiding Max in the basement. This secret should be kept because it is saving Max's life.
A secret is something that someone tells you in confidence that you will not share this with anybody as it private between you and the person that told you. They trust that in telling you you will not go around telling everybody. However, there are definitely certain cases where secrets should not be kept, resulting in the answer, not all secrets should be kept. An example of when a secret should not be kept was mentioned by Katie in class and was if a true friend were to tell you a secret about them or someone they knew of was contemplating suicide, that secret should not be kept. In telling someone you could save their lives and make things better for the person. The secret should only not be kept if it were to be in the best interest of the person. Sometimes it may not seem like the right thing to break someones trust but certain situations it should be done to protect or help the person in the end.
Depending on how serious a secret is determines if you should keep it between you and the person who told you, or if you should tell someone. Although most people keep secrets between them and the person who told them, if the secret puts anyones life in danger or could cause harm to someone or something helps someone to determine if they should tell someone. If a someone tells a close friend a secret such as their locker combination, then that should stay between you and a close friend. On the other hand, if the secret was much more serious, such as they want to commit suicide, the person being told the secret should tell someone. They should tell someone because if they do not, it could mean that the person who told the secret could loose their life. Not all secrets should be kept, depending on how serious the secret is.
All secrets should not be kept. But in the case of the Book Thief, some secrets should be kept. A secret in their case is a matter of life and death. For example, if someone in the Hubberman family were to tell their secret that they were hidding a jew, then there would be serious consequences. But in the context of the real world, not all secrets should be kept. Like what we discussed in class, if your friend told you that they were going to commit suicide but did not want you telling anyone, then thats a secret that could jeopardize there life and in that case you would tell someone.
Not all secrets should be kept. A great example of a time that someone should keep a secret, is portrayed through the Book Thief when Liesel and her family hid a Jew. You don't want to just go around telling everyone that your hiding an enemy to the state in your basement. But if you are depressed and thinking of killing yourself, that is not something to keep to your self. In that case, you should tell someone about your secret and not keep it to yourself.
Not all secrets should be kept. Through the novel examples supporting this are demonstrated. For example, the Hubermans should not tell anyone about the jew hiding in their basement. That secret should be kept so they can protect themselves. Secrets that should not be kept are secrets told for the protection of others. For example, secrets having to do with lives at risk, violence to other people, and safety should be told so someone can help them. Some secrets should be kept and some secrets should not be kept. Not all secrets should be kept.
